Panopticon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The word \u201cpanopticon\u201d is a combination of two Greek words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u03c0\u1fb6\u03bd (p\u00e2n<\/em>, \u201call\u201d) and \u1f40\u03c0\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2 (optik\u00f3s<\/em>, \u201cvisible, vision\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vision of all \u2013 the total vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concept was coined by British philosopher Jeremy Bentham, one of the epigones of the Enlightenment and the founder of the Utilitarianism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The panopticon is an architectural design of the ideal ideal prison \u2013 but it was also thought as a model for factories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The panopticon was thought a much more efficient way to keep the people in prison:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The total vision. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was no space to hide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The controller could see any time anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And most importantly, inmates could also watch and control each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The total vision is, at the same time, the total control.<\/p>\n\n\n
